Wedding Planners…. Yay or Nay?

So I recently reached out to a top Nigerian wedding planner in Lagos to see if she could help with planning my wedding.

I follow her on the gram (Instagram) and love what she puts together so I decided to reach out to her and find out how much she charges what she does etc. etc.  She told me she charges N 1.2 Million which is equivalent to £2,200 $2,800. I said ‘okayyyyyy excuse ma… please what does your service include, what does the N1.2M cover? , she mentioned the below…..

  • Wedding Concept & Design
  • Venue Selection
  • Catering and Menu Selection
  • Music & Entertainment
  • Staging and Audio Visual
  • Lighting Design
  • Invitations & Guest Management
  • Contract Review & Negotiation
  • Rehearsal Coordination
  • Beauty
  • Vendors Meeting
  • Budgeting
  • Photography/Videography
  • Cake Selection
  • Security

There was a pause on the phone after she mentioned everything; I said ‘excuse ma, decorations nko? , do you do any decorations at all?’ she replied NO.

Me, I’m the ‘Live good, for less -bargain hunter kind of girl’ not because I can’t afford expensive things but I believe in spending wisely.

So my mind is already doing calculations. I will pay someone over £2000 to look for venue that still needs to be paid for and decorated and vendors who still need to be paid. I said thanks ma, I’ll get back to you.

I’m not here to knock anyone’s hustle she actually does a fantastic job, but I cannot see myself forking out that kind of money for something I can do nearly as good (not blowing my own trumpet abeg!)

(Side note) and what is it with vendors who get a little insta famous and feel they can charge ridiculous prices for their service, like Hello!!!! You need customers to sustain your business, stop chasing people away with ridiculous quotes all in the name of dollar rate (My fellow Nigerians will understand what I’m on about)

Please, I’m looking for the underG’s…. those who are not known but can do the job just as well.

My conclusion, if you do hire a wedding planner, be prepared to save a lot of time (though not a lot of money).

Whether or not to hire a wedding planner is really a decision about how many decisions you feel like deciding.

So far I have the following confirmed, venue, DJ, Photographer and designer. Now on the search for a decorator!

  1. I tried the wedding planner route so my money going down the drain for a few minutes of peace and decided to ride that wave by myself. You’ll be surprised how many contacts you and your peeps have between y’all. Since you still have time, do these things on your own if you don’t mind being annoyed once or several times lol. But it’s also fun.

    1. Lol girl, I’m totally in agreement with you. I guess doing it yourself is also part of the experience. It also has that personal feel to it, like you created the perfect day by yourself. Life is about sacrifice and nothing good comes easy 😁

  2. I totally agree o.. but wait o.I think we contacted the same Planner cos i got the same price tag.So my Sister n my humble self have decided to be Planners Extraordinaire. My Sister can bargain for Africa and she normally Coordinates Events.. so we are a two Man Army. We ll just get a Coordinator for the Wedding day cos she is going to be my CBM.

    1. Looool we may well have contacted the same planner. I just can’t justify spending that amount of money on a planner when I have people around me who can do just as well.

  3. am just seeing this but I’ll comment anyways am a very passionate person about weddings am really good at planner a wedding and I put God first if only am given an opportunity I wish to make every bride Happy, with my skills and believe me I’ll be so glad if all I work away wit is just 20000 but the joy on their faces is my greatest happiness. I hope I get a reply soon. for me wedding planners are good.

    1. Hiya, thanks for your comment. it’s lovely to see genuine people who are passionate about their craft and not just hungry for money. Is there somewhere I can see more of your work ? Instagram page or website?

  4. I say a big YES to having a wedding planner, especially if you aren’t in the country. A big no to the huge price though. I found most of my vendors myself and I just needed someone to coordinate everything, especially on the day of the wedding. Working with my planner so far, I wish I had used him earlier to find some vendors for me because apparently, I have been charged too much. Anyway, my planner has been of tremendous help to me because I don’t live in Nigeria and I will not ask my friends and family to put their lives on hold just to plan my wedding.
