Should I Change At My Reception?

I was at a wedding over the weekend, and something different happened. Something I wish I did at my own wedding.

As soon as we welcomed the bride & groom into the venue, instead of going up to the high table, they went through the back door and changed into their evening outfit. Whilst the couple were gone we the guests were entertained by a live band & small chops – not the typical Nigerian live band, it was a group of saxophonists playing popular Nigerian tunes. It was so different and refreshing.

I wish I did the same thing at my wedding. After spending so much on my reception dress, I was disappointed that I only got to wear it for about 1 hour. We waited until almost everything had finished before we went to change.

A lot of women ask themselves the question: should I change after my reception? And the truth is that there is no right or wrong answer; however you may want to consider some things:

  1. Should I bother with an evening dress or just stay in my wedding dress all day, after all I paid a fortune for it?
  2. Should I consider spending a little bit extra on a wedding dress that can somehow convert into an evening dress?
  3. Should I make sure I inform my wedding planner that we will be changing immediately we get into the venue, after all it is the reception ceremony.

The type of wedding dress you choose may also be a determining factor; for instance, a puffy and heavy dress may be difficult to wear all evening long, while a light or even short dress may be easier to move around in for hours. Regardless of your dress, whether you change or not is completely up to you. You just need to do what feels right! If you do choose to switch out of your dress after the reception, make sure you manage your budget so that you feel comfortable buying a dress that you’ll love to change into even if you don’t get to wear it for as long as you would like to.

  1. I don’t think it’s necessary to change at the reception unless the wedding dress is uncomfortable. I didn’t change at my reception because I forgot my reception dress at home. Since I was against changing from the beginning, everyone thought I left my dress at home on purpose!
